16 – The Earth Tramper, by Anon, translation of the start

Often he, the homeless,   must call

on merciful God,   while he heartsick

goes the waterways,   long at the oar

churning with hands   that rime-cold sea,

the exile’s road:   doom bitter and fixed.”

So says the earth-tramper      mindful of toil,

grief of slaughter      dear kinsfolk felled.

“Often shall I      lonely at daybreak,

lament my cares.      Not now to the living, to none

may I show my thoughts      daring

to openly speak.      I now truly know

the warrior’s code,      that noble custom

of locking his heart,      binding it fast,

held hard shut      let him think what he will.

no care-worn heart      withstands its weird.

No troubled mind      can draw help to it.

Who seeks respect      and is dreary often

Deep in his breast-coffin      binds that fast.”
