on merciful God, while he heartsick goes the waterways, long at the oar churning with hands that rime-cold sea, the exile’s road: doom bitter and fixed.” So says the earth-tramper mindful of toil, grief of slaughter dear kinsfolk felled. “Often shall I lonely at daybreak, lament my cares. Not now to the living, to none may I show my thoughts daring to openly speak. I now truly know the warrior’s code, that noble custom of locking his heart, binding it fast, held hard shut let him think what he will. no care-worn heart withstands its weird. No troubled mind can draw help to it. Who seeks respect and is dreary often Deep in his breast-coffin binds that fast.” |
