ABOUT BRIAN WHITTINGHAM

Brian Whittingham is a poet, fiction writer, playwright and retired lecturer. In 2000 he won first prize in the Sunday Herald 'Short Story Competition'.

A former steel-worker/draughtsman, Brian performed his steel-working poems as part of the BBC's Ballad of the Big Ships Live in Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall in 2007.

Brian has published 10 collections of poetry, including, Walking Between Worlds (2018) by Red Squirrel Press, Bunnets n Bowlers (2009) Luath Press, The Old Man from Brooklyn (2000) Mariscat Press, and for children, Septimus Pitt (2007) Luath Press.

Four of his stage plays have been performed by Scottish Theatre companies, including Diamonds in Bedlam @ The Birth of Impressionism, Impressionist exhibition at the McLellan Galleries in Glasgow.

In 2011, Brian was invited as visiting professor of Creative Writing at Seattle University, Washingbton DC where he taught a narrative poetry class. His collection Clocking In Clocking Out: poems and photographs on the subject of work (2012) Luath Press, was completed during his time in Seattle. He has also delivered workshops for schools & adults along with Glasgow's Kelvingrove Museum & Art gallery Education Department.

Brian held a writing fellowship at the Yaddo Artist's Colony in New York in 1994, and in 2008 he received a Robert Louis Stevenson fellowship at Chevillon Grez in France. He has tutored and performed his work across Scotland, England, Ireland, Europe and The USA.

Brian lectured Creative Writing for 16 years before retiring in 2018 to take up the position of Renfrewshire's Tannahill Makar.

As a tutor , teacher, facilitator and lecturer Brian has delivered workshops and read his work to varied client groups such as primary & secondary school pupils, further education students, community groups, senior citizens, mental health groups, addiction recovery groups, reminiscing groups etc. He has worked in a variety of venues ie. schools, colleges, universities, museums, art galleries, libraries, prisons, the Normandy Beaches, drop in centres, Glasgow Cathedral and Paisley Abbey.

Brian has edited West Coast Magazine, Nerve Magazine & New Writing Scotland and has had 2 stints as Writer in Residence with Tyne & Esk, also Midlothian & East Lothian writers.
