Maggie and the Little Pollok Carpet
Page 3

Maggie heard a rustling sound behind her in the room and looked round. The little carpet was floating four inches above the floor and all the golden symbols around the edge of it were shining very brightly. She realised that she wasn't cold any more as she slid off the chair and walked over to the floating carpet and watched as it hovered in front of her.
Maggie reached out and put her hand on it and it moved closer touching her leg. She leaned down and put both her hands on the carpet and it stayed where it was, it did not sink back to the floor. Maggie knelt down on the little carpet and it floated up to near the ceiling. She let out a little shriek, but, strangely, she didn't feel frightened. It was as if she was tied to the carpet and couldn't fall off. It hovered there and Maggie could feel her hair touching the ceiling. She leaned forward a little and clutched the front of the carpet – it moved in that direction. She tried leaning a little to the left and the carpet turned to the left. She pressed her knees on the carpet and it moved down towards the floor. She lifted the front of the carpet and it floated higher.
Maggie now realised that the little carpet could fly with her on it. The carpet was hovering at the window so she leaned forward and the carpet flew out of the window.
